Sylvain Gélinas

Executive Producer

Sylvain Gélinas is Deaf and lives with Usher Syndrome. Born in Senneterre in Abitibi, he attended Côte-du-Nord School, Gadbois School, and Lucien-Pagé High School. After graduating from the communications program at the Collège Rosemont, he continued his education in French at Cégep du Vieux-Montréal. Since beginning his studies, Sylvain has been involved in numerous initiatives and projects within the Deaf community. At Lucien-Pagé, he wrote Joe, a theatrical adaptation of the life of Hellen Keller, and both wrote and directed the film Le Dernier Secret. Later, he acted in and was assistant director of Romeo and Juliette (2001-2003), an adaptation by Denise Read at Théâtre des Mains.

In 2007, he was selected to be a contestant on Le Banquier, a television game show, where he won several prizes that allowed him to incorporate Cinéall Productions des Sourds, a film production company which he founded in 1999 and he continues to direct today. In 2008, he completed his training with the Service d’aide aux jeunes entrepreneurs [SAJE], after which he began to offer three main types of production services : filming events, creating video, and adapting/translating texts into LSQ and ASL on video and DVD. Since 1999, he has directed a total of 12 short, mid-length and feature length films, and he continues to produce cinematic works with his team.

Thanks to Sylvain, the video component of the graphic signed novel was shot in Cinéall’s studios. With its professional cameras, extensive lighting systems, and a green chrome key screen, Cinéall possesses all the equipment necessary to shoot sign language videos capable of capturing hand movements and facial expressions in great detail.
